Couples & Kids - March 12, 2011

What a great day for a fishing tournament. Spring break has started, the weather is beautiful and the bass spawn is on! 41 teams of Couples and Kids and 11 teams with aluminum boats came out to fish and share a meal together. Vic and Debbie Cunningham landed a pair of 5 pounders in a 16.24# bag, winning $2,190 in the Couples and Kids Tournament. Ken Howden and Gary Understiller took 1st place in the Best Bet Aluminum Boat Tournament with 17.18#, earning them $1,076.

Dale and Cole BuserAlso included in the crowd were two special teams. First was the father and son team of Dale and Cole Buser. They traveled all the way from Gallup, NM just because Cole has been asking and asking dad to let him fish a team tournament. They took 15th place with 10.24 lbs. and had a really good time. Here is a thank you Dale sent out.

"My son and I drove from Gallup, NM to participate in the couples and kids tourney Saturday and want to thank all of you for making us feel welcome! We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Friday we were met by Ken and I think his nickname was Buzz which was a fun time. Later on met Rich and his wife they were awesome and gave us fishing info about Rosie, Thanks guys! It's really nice to meet people who are so helpful especially when yes it's about the tournament but it's about the kids having fun so they continue the tradition of the sport. Also thanks to AllStar for feeding us and making us feel so welcome I know we will be back!"

Devin and Twanisha AndersonOur second special team was Devin and Twanisha Anderson. Devin recently returned from an active tour of duty in Afghanistan. Bobby O'Donnell decided that Devin’s service to the country could not go un-recognized. He put together a very nice bag of fishing tackle and nice gift for Twanisha.  During the awards ceremony, Bobby called the couple up to the front to present them with their gifts, thanking them for their service and the crowd burst out in spontaneous applause and gave them a standing ovation. It was quite moving. Here is the thank you Devin sent us.

"First off, we would like to thank the staff and all participants of Allstar. This was our first tournament with this great group of people and will definitely not be our last. As soon as we stepped out of the truck we were greeted with such hospitality that we immediately felt welcome. The night before the tourney Allstar held a potluck style dinner and the food was fantastic. The morning of the tournament, donuts and coffee were served as we waited for our time of departure. When 3:00pm rolled around and our bag already weighed, we enjoyed another delicious meal from the Allstar crew while we waited for others to weigh-in.

As we were standing waiting for the results, I was taken by surprise as I was being recognized for my military service. I am always grateful to receive even a thank you, but to get a standing ovation was phenomenal and definitely a day I will not forget. Even though we ended up in 17th place (out of 41 teams) I felt like I had won. No, I didn't leave with a check, but I did receive some very nice merchandise and newfound friends. So in conclusion, I would like to thank the Allstar crew and all participants for the wonderful tournament experience and we will see you all next month (as long as my wife doesn't go into labor) :-) If you have never fished with Allstar, definitely give it a try. You won't regret it!!"
